What is Subtraction?

Subtraction, third in the Mathemafiction series, is here, there, and everywhere good books are sold, or at least it soon will be, because all booksellers will surely want to know what happens to a subtracted life. Subtraction is here anyway–just click on the link.

But what is Mathemafiction? I’m a mathematician, so mathematical ideas come naturally to me. But not, mathemafiction is not about learning to do math.

51xcie2u2blThe first novel, Divide by Zero, told the story of a strong community divided by tragedy. Why Divide by Zero? Because division by zero results in an undefined answer–it all depends on the initial conditions and the details of the equation. Divide x by x and you’ll always get 1. Divide 2x by x and you’ll get 2. Divide x squared by x and you’ll get x, which is 0 when x is 0. But divide 1 by x and you’ll get something that grows infinitely large as x grows small. When the subdivision of Paradise is divided by a violent crime… will it explode or unite around a finite solution?

512bbjmvzuflThe second Mathemafiction novel is Infinite Sum. It tells the story of a mother weighed down by the “infinite sum” of her troubles. She has a troubled past. She paints troubled pictures. And her perfect family and marriage might fall apart. The thing is, some infinite sums add up to nicely finite solutions. Try adding 1 plus 1/2 plus 1/4 plus 1/8 plus 1/16…. The more terms you add, the nearer you get to 2, which isn’t infinite at all. Will a mother’s sum of troubles sum to something manageably finite as well?

51ryws67wolThen there’s Subtraction: A man whose had everything subtracted from his life… a man alone, who’d rather keep it that way since relationships only end in someone being hurt… a man who trusts no one, teaches math, and despite everything cares deeply for his students… What happens when this last thing that matters is threatened, when an autistic child is subtracted from his class? But subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive, and this teacher’s negative attitude just might change over the course of the novel.

My Best-Selling Titles

Divide by Zero was a best-seller once. So were Genesis People and Bethlehem’s Baby. Tails of Mystery won an award from my publisher recently as another best-seller. Does that make me a best-selling author?

But my best-selling book at the moment is Heroes Best Friend, a very cool anthology in which I have one (best-selling?) short story, and from which I earn the occasional cent – it’s my best-paying book. Coming close second is the fourth volume of the Writers’ Mill Journal, from which I earn nothing – all online proceeds go directly to the library, since the journal is designed, written and produced by our local writers’ group. Then there’s my latest novel, Infinite Sum. I hope it sold some copies when it came out, but they don’t register on my Amazon author dashboard. And so I wonder, does this make me a worst-selling author instead?

Or perhaps I’m in-between. Thirty-nine books to my name. Sales that garner occasional payments in cents. And dreams that reach the sky. Plus coffee.

Meanwhile our writers’ group has just released volume five – find it soon in a bookstore online! We’re working on a Tails of Mystery fan-fiction collection as well (with permission from my publisher). We’ll probably call it Zeus and Bo and Fred and Joe and Co, since Fred and Joe were based on two beautiful dogs called  Zeus and Bo, and since the stories run the gamut of many animals.

If you’re looking for a writing prompt – and aren’t we always –

here is the menagerie now living with Fred and Joe. Look for a way to use all of these creatures, plus at least one more, in one story or poem:

  • Fred – a large dog
  • Joe – a small dog
  • Cat – a large cat
  • Kitkit – a small cat, kitten to Cat
  • Zombie – a canary
  • Squeak – a mouse
  • the child, still very small
  • the man, and
  • the woman

Now Write!

Then watch for A Nose For Adventure, coming soon. (But Zombie and Squeak won’t enter the series until later – I’m writing faster than I can best-sell!)

The Oregon Historical Society

Last year a friend took me to the Oregon Historical Society’s Holiday Cheer event. Two huge rooms were filled with lines of tables where authors sat behind displays of their books. So many Oregon authors! So many books! I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, bought a couple of souvenirs (books of course), and ended the day with a fascinating tour of the building’s various displays, learning much of Oregon history, culture and art.

Earlier this year the same friend took me to listen to some real live Oregon author’s speaking. Jane Kirkpatrick is always fascinating to hear, and Greg Nokes was great too. I had a wonderful visit and learned some more Oregon history. And I bought a book (of course).

But now I’m getting ready to go the Oregon Historical Society’s building on my own. My friend will visit, but I’ll be one of those authors behind their tables at the Holiday Cheer event. I’ll be counted as a genuine Oregon author, and I’ll smile and talk about my books – even, hopefully, sell a few. Divide by Zero will be offered in the gift store. And I’ll live a dream come true. Just look at this poster! (Well, look at the cover in the center at the bottom, and you’ll see what I mean.)

Deeth Holiday Cheer FlyerAh, but what if you don’t live in Oregon, and can’t meet with me there? Don’t worry. You too can find Divide by Zero, on Second Wind Publishing’s website at:

Playing with the birds

I think spring sprang to life today. Lots of little green shoots appeared in our garden. And a gorgeous springer spaniel, who just happens to be visiting for the weekend, sprang over them with delightful agility. Meanwhile the local birds, perhaps unconvinced of said springer spaniel’s goodwill, sprang into song.

Birdsong: the sound of tweeting birds.

Twitter: light-hearted nonsense chatter.

Tweet: The highly recommended, up-and-coming (or already here–why am I always behind the curve) form of advertizing your books.

Easter! Creation to Salvation in 100 words a day
Get ready for Easter. Read the whole Bible story in 100 words a day

So here I sit, like a twit, composing 140 character tweets that include links (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords perhaps) to my Easter book, and realizing before Ash Wednesday would have been a better time for them (but it was still winter, wet and soggy, and lacking in birdsong back then). Still, the tweets will go out (as will the dog), and maybe I’ll even check to see if they generate any interest, or lead to sales.

I’m told real authors check their sales figures as frequently as real marketers tweet. But I’m still behind the curve–I probably have to figure out how to check them first.

The Joys of Print

It’s here! It’s real! It’s Bethlehem’s Baby in print! And I’m over the moon.

20140117_135350

But now, of course, the vexing question is, how many copies should I buy.

Reasons to buy more:

  1. My Mum wants to take some home to England with her.
  2. My friends prefer real books to ebooks, and have said they’d like to read it.
  3. Cape Arago Press is a real publisher, which always (at least in my brief experience) encourages real buyers.
  4. If I can’t sell copies now, they’ll surely sell on my table at 2014’s Christmas Fair.

Reasons not to buy more:

  1. It’s January: Our credit card’s still bent out of shape from Christmas.
  2. It’s January: Bethlehem’s Baby was born in December.
  3. How do I know my friends will want to buy it?

Reasons to ignore my doubts:

  1. Mum says buy more.
  2. I can always sell to strangers.

So what shall I do?

  1. Buy books!

Watch this space for Bethlehem’s Baby in print, coming soon on Amazon (and maybe other places too): http://www.amazon.com/Bethlehems-Five-Minute-Bible-Story-Series-ebook/dp/B00EY172MA/

and don’t forget to look for other books in the Five-Minute Bible StoryTM series.

What price kindle free?

Genesis People (#1 in the Five Minute Bible StoryTM Series) is free on kindle from now ’til January 14th. And I sold over a hundred copies today!

Pause while I do a happy dance with my Mum…

Wouldn’t you want to dance? Over a hundred new readers cared enough to download copies. Over a hundred new readers might write reviews. And over a hundred new readers might choose to buy Bethlehem’s Baby (#6) in print soon… so very soon. The first print copy’s already in the mail from my publisher!

Of course, my husband saw my happy dance and asked why. Being a practical kind of guy, he answered my triumphant tally of sales by demanding to know the price. When I answered “free,” he said “Then you gave them away. That isn’t selling.” But perhaps it’s marketing.

I’ll get back to you later on whether or not it’s successful marketing. Meanwhile I’ll hope my readers might get back to me for more. And I’ll rejoice in the fact that I’m enjoying writing #8, Galilee’s Gift.
